Obituary: Fred Austin Schwendiman 1919 ~ 2004Fred Austin Schwendiman, age 85, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2004. He was born May 26, 1919, in Auckland, New Zealand, the son of Fred W. and Lillian Austin Schwendiman. Fred grew up in Salt Lake City and married Winona Denhalter in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on November 15, 1940. He served an LDS Mission to England and the Eastern States. He was an officer in the US Navy during World War II and retired as a Navy Captain after 30 years in the Navy Reserve. Fred attended the University of Utah and Harvard University. He served as an Administrator for both BYU and the LDS Church for more than 30 years. In 1953 he was made student housing director at BYU and by 1974 he was overseeing the University's Physical Plant, putting him in charge of the planning, construction and maintenance of the 380 buildings on campus. During this time he was also made administrator for physical facilities in the LDS Church Education System. He was Support Services Vice President of BYU from 1979 until 1984. For 22 years he managed Physical Services at the Missionary Training Center and he played a major role in the building of the Provo Temple. After his retirement from BYU, he and his wife Nonie resided in Jerusalem, where he was project director for the construction of the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. Fred helped organize the first student stake at BYU in 1956 and later served as president of the Third Stake for 12 years. He was a past member of the general boards of the YMMIA and Sunday School. He was currently serving on Advisory Boards for the Hale Center Theater, Crandall Historical Printing Museum and The Quest for the Gift of Life Foundation. The Jerusalem Center project was the highlight of his life and he will be greatly missed by all of his friends in Israel. Fred's greatest qualities were giving to others and serving the Lord. We will miss him very much. He is preceded in death by his wife Nonie, his parents and his brother Mark. Fred is the father of three children: Fred C. (Maureen), Swendy (Mike) VanDorn and Paul. He has 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grand-children and his dear friend Leona. Funeral services under the direction of Walker Sanderson Funeral Home of Orem will be held Friday, July 9, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the Sharon 2nd Ward Chapel, 641 South 400 East, Orem. Friends may call at the Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday morning from 9:30 10:45 a.m. at the Church prior to services. Burial will be in the Wasatch Lawn Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
